Jacqueline Bisson
Labelled cheeky and wicked as a child she was a natural and armed with the knack to improvise on
the spot. Spontaneous reactions and witty responses delivered in song, poetry or verse was
commonplace. The go to in often volatile situations saw her getting into all sorts of trouble. Labelled
cheeky and wicked, just some of the words used to describe her perceived unruly and inappropriate
comments and behaviour. Consequences were never considered because the urge and impulse to
say what she thought and felt far outweighed the fear of repercussions and punishment. She was
misunderstood, an intelligent child who knew too much for her age therefore had a lot to say and no
platform to express herself. Her intelligence and ability to create were not encouraged as it was
viewed unsavoury however, her overwhelming desire driven by her innate strength, confidence and
creative aspirations as a wordsmith and musician enabled her to rise above the controversy and
continue to develop her craft albeit in the prism of her own mind.
Jacqui has always been an improv comic & skit performer and developed the concept further when
she began coordinating the annual International Women’s Day Events (IWD events). Various comic
skits focus on the social construction of beauty and body image amidst the role of media and the
fashion industry. In particular, the construction of stereo types that are imposed on women, which
impact their self-esteem and confidence and aim to oppress and undermine women which is
disempowering on all levels. The impact on women’s health is deplorable and has created a
populous of women who are dissatisfied, discontent with their own bodies and often experience a
sense of worthlessness and self-doubt. The flow on effect is the creation of a social view of what is
beautiful and acceptable. Creating images and stereo types of what women must adhere and aspire
in order to be considered worthy and acceptable. To achieve status based on a socially constructed
ideology and perception of what is considered to be beautiful which is totally unrealistic.
Jacqui uses comedy and skits that challenge the perceptions of social norms by debunking the myths
of unrealistic constructs and turns them on their head. Jacqui is a multitalented, multi skilled
performing artist, a singer song writer, poet, and skit writer who started out doing improv skits with
a group of friends who have followed her into the realm of Stand-Up Comedy. She is full of surprises,
and you never know who you’re going to meet at each show. Telling tales of childhood and family
dysfunction, the challenging angst of teen years and the most embarrassing cringe worthy moments.
Reflecting on and paying homage to her Irish ancestry and times gone by comparing current day
situations and social issues with a sense of newfound freedom with her coming of age. Jacqui has
supported National Comedians such as Bev Killick & Chris Franklin. She has also performed at various
comedy venues in Townsville, Melbourne & Brisbane and the Adelaide Fringe Festival.
Jacqui has recorded a comedy album titled ‘Yeah Nah! No Rules Apply and it is available for purchase
on CD and is also on various platforms including Spotify and Apple Music. She is in the process of
recording another comedy album combining the craft of singer song writer, music, skit writing and
comedy into the huge personality that she has sculpted and developed over time.
Jacqui has performed with the Sistas in Comedy event at the Northern Fringe Festival in Townsville
which is happening again in October 2024.
